Please explain the difficulty you are having with Substack, how urgent the issue is, what you’ve tried to do to get around it, and any recommendations for improvement. Thank you for your time.
Hello! Just an idea... I'd love to have an easy BUTTON/LINK to add to my posts for readers to access my Substack ARCHIVE. I was thinking it would ideally go in the Buttons drop down menu, to easily insert when creating a new post (just like the sign up and subscribe buttons). I keep having to go back and find the archive link to add to my posts (and other places as well, like my website or to share with people). The order of what I post is important. I'm guessing others might feel the same. Thank you for considering this!
One suggestion which I'm sure you've had plenty of: I'd like to host eBooks. Mine are .epub and shorter (100-500K) than most audio files.
A more complicated suggestion is the ability to have isolated topics. On the front page, the list of posts would only show the topic name. Clicking that would show all the posts in that topic. Think of it as a book link on the front page and clicking that shows all the chapters.
The main advantage is decluttering the front page list of all posts.
When adding posts to a topic, add an option to show the new post on the front page for some limited time.
Why isn't recommended by included in subscriber export? This would be the most useful thing for me to know but it's not included for some reason. The data clearly exists, but the only way to see it is in the individual sign-up emails, which is not sustainable as my audience grows faster.
When I drag an image around the text editor, its caption gets erased.
There should be a way to change an image to a new one, and retain the caption. (Just now you have to delete the old image completely and replacing it, which means re-typing the caption.)
It should be possible to copy and paste an image's caption.
When I set a custom thumbnail for an essay, the preview text is frozen thereafter. This shouldn't happen, or there should be a way to refresh the text.
I am bewildered why Substack, as a platform heavily focused on text posts by authors, still has no editing command tool to center text or underline it. Would also be great to have a text box one could edit in terms of borders and background.
Welcome Stan: I filed that comment nearly four years ago and have NEVER gotten any response. And let me again emphasize...Substack is supposed to be a forum for WRITERS....these are basic tools of text editing. Cannot fathom why they STILL are not available.
I'd like to be able to integrate a chatbot (from chatbase for instance) to help users navigate around my blog as it is more of a knowledge base than a periodical.
I'm concerned that apparently the only embedding capability for rich streaming media is YouTube, as YouTube has shifted its business model to routinely incorporate in-line advertising into its hosted content. I don't wish my readers to be interrupted by such ads, which is why our hosting is now done on a (paid-for) Vimeo account. It would therefore be greatly advantageous to embed video material from Vimeo (in just the same way as from YouTube).
Admittedly we could have uploaded the same videos to Substack - but this would involve us effectively trying to maintain our video resources in multiple locations.
So - I'm making this feature request - for Substack to support Vimeo embedding - on the basis that the YouTube inline advertising model has now become problematic for our intended readership.
Need inline math (like MathJax or KaTeX or whatever). Doing everything in math blocks is just impossible.
In fact, while math blocks are sometimes nice, inline math is MORE important than math blocks. With inline math you can just simulate a math block by giving it its own line.
But when you have a paragraph and need to put a symbol inside of a line of text, you just can't do that with a math block interrupting the whole paragraph with a huge math block.
Need a way to embed audio from an outside service where podcasts are hosted. My show has been around for +20 years on Libsyn. I utilize Libsyn's dynamic and geographic ad systems with my sponsors, so I'm unable to move the podcast to Substack.
It would be great if, when you add a link to an MP3 file, you get a basic player just like you do when you input a YouTube video .. or when you upload an audio file.
Another option is to enable support for Embedly URLs where you enable players from the hosting provider. For me, the embedly would be:
I would like Substack to add a new 'Team Member' type that receives email notifications.
Currently, if I use the Team functionality to add another 'Admin' account - that account DOES NOT receive email notifiations - only the owner does...not optimal.
Also, I don't want to have to give full admin control to someone only to receive notifications.
There are two solutions to this:
1. Add a new account type of "Notifications Only" that receives all notifications for the newsletter and can therefore manage accordingly.
2. Add a flag to ALL user accounts so that they do/don't receive notifications.
Hello. It would be useful as a writer to be able to present the work in different ways like a normal database e.g. I would like to be able to file articles into my own categories and to help subscribers find and navigate more efficiently.
I just discovered that you can use the link icon in your menu to add a URL behind an image. It's a useful feature that I wish I had known about earlier.
But for a writer, unlike a link attached to text, there's no visible indication that a link has been added and no affordance for the writer to remove or change the link. For a reader, you can discover that there's a link behind the image because the pointer changes to a hand.
Here's my enhancement request.
To make the feature more discoverable to writers, add new commands to the pop-up menu (under the three dots on the image).
Currently the menu says:
Edit image
Edit caption
Edit alt text
Add watermark
--------
Wide width
Full width
--------
Delete image
================
Proposed (changes marked with *):
Edit image
Edit caption
Edit alt text
*Add/Change/Delete link
Add watermark
--------
Wide width
Full width
--------
Delete image
========
I'm hopeful that if there is no link attached to the image, then only "Add link" appears. If there is a current link, then Change link, and Delete link will show in the menu.
Hi. Not a complaint. Just a request about assets for reposting. I like the idea of the first option with the grey filter, but it's so dark and gloomy. Could there be a lighter version that you can also add text? Thanks.

Would also be great to be able to get notified/be able to see any times your Substack is linked in another Substack.

I'd like to add highlighting to the list of basic features that writers expect to be able to use.
I'd also like to ask a question. Does Substack ever look at these requests, or does the Suggestion Box feed into the garbage can?
